The Battle of the Five Armies

I’m going to be honest: I was actively dreading seeing “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.” Not because I’m anti-hobbit (I am decidedly pro-hobbit, anti-orc), but because last year’s “The Desolation of Smaug,” the second chapter of Peter Jackson’s second trilogy, nearly led to my boredom-induced death. There was just SO MUCH MOVIE to get through, and a lot of it was not good.

At the time, I blamed Jackson’s apparent desire to turn what is a simple book with complicated themes into a one-stop shop for all things Tolkien, including an annex for Tolkien knockoffs, like the sidewalk stalls that sell purses proudly marked “Chanell.”
